Traditional\u00a0master-plans or city regulations generally regulate fa\u00e7ade materials, building\u00a0heights and set-backs towards\u00a0the surrounding streets, often leaving the \u2018back\u00a0side\u2019 as a heterogeneous amalgam of service areas and oddly shaped\u00a0contours. In\u00a0this proposal the emphasis is turned precisely towards the inside of the block,\u00a0where the definition of a clear\u00a0boundary and a particular materiality become\u00a0the key aspects to generate a strong and innovative urban proposal.<\/p>\n
At present, the scattered distribution of volumes into the urban blocks of Belgorod, generate\u00a0undefined and fragmented\u00a0\u2018in-between\u2019\u00a0and \u2018left-over\u2019 spaces. This boundless and irregular maze is filled up\u00a0indistinctly with interior roads, parking\u00a0spaces and green areas, without any clear\u00a0ambition and definition for the open spaces. By joining all these left over\u00a0spaces\u00a0into one clearly defined figure, a huge interior courtyard of more than 200\u00a0by 70 meter is created. This rectangular\u00a0park will become a powerful public\u00a0space that defines the interior character of the block.\u00a0By rotating this rectangle along\u00a0the\u00a0historical trace of Belgorod a playful tension is created between the actual city grid and the interior\u00a0void.<\/p>\n
The wedge shaped areas\u00a0between the outer streets and the interior park are filled out with a dense composition\u00a0of\u00a0efficient urban housing: all different in form and orientation, but based on\u00a0the same proficient U-spaces that look out over\u00a0the surrounding streets, enclose\u00a0private gardens and define a luxurious entrance lobby. While the\u00a0housing volumes are simply\u00a0rendered in white stucco \u2013 reclaiming the original linguistic meaning of the\u00a0\u2018white city\u2019 of\u00a0Belgorod \u2013 the facades towards the magnificent inner courtyard\u00a0are covered with shiny brass sheets and adorned by\u00a0large balconies with brass metalwork.\u00a0The combination of\u00a0these elegant interior facades with a precise grid of\u00a0local birch trees in the park below, creates an inspiring urban environment with a strong and memorable character.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
