For the densification of the campus a new central focal point is inserted into the existing master plan. The new School of Art Architecture and Design consists of a composition of similar rectangular buildings inscribed by a circular perimeter which links all new buildings in between them and with the existing elements of the campus. This ring establishes an effective underground connection when the winter temperatures do not allow the exterior connections and serves furthermore as a technical loop that distributes energy in between the buildings. In summer time the lowered circular plaza becomes an active outdoor extension of the complex.
What has the right-size is at the same time both large and small, few and many, near and far, simple and complex, open and closed; will furthermore always be both part of a whole and embrace both unity and diversity ... (Aldo van Eyck, Steps Towards a Configurative Discipline, 1962)
